A 3-stage whole-house water filter integrated with a 254 nm UV sterilisation chamber — the configuration that adds physical pathogen kill to the standard sediment-and-carbon treatment. Installed at the point of entry, it treats every tap, shower, and outlet in the building.
Why UV Belongs on Tank and Bore Water
Filtration cartridges remove particulate, chlorine, and most chemical contaminants — but they don't kill bacteria, viruses, or protozoan cysts. On municipal mains water that's already chlorinated, this rarely matters. On rural tank water, bore water, or any unchlorinated supply, microbiological contamination is a real concern. UV-C light at the germicidal wavelength of 254 nm damages the DNA of bacteria, viruses, and cysts as water passes through the chamber, rendering them unable to reproduce.
It's a chemical-free disinfection method — no chlorine taste, no by-products, no residual added to the water. The UV lamp consumes a few tens of watts and runs continuously.
Three-Stage Configuration
- Stage 1 — Sediment filtration: removes silt, dirt, and rust from the incoming water. Critical for UV: the lamp can only kill what the light reaches, so suspended particulate that shadows pathogens must be filtered out first.
- Stage 2 — Carbon block filter: reduces chlorine (where present), taste, and odour. Removes organic contaminants that affect drinking water taste downstream.
- Stage 3 — UV disinfection chamber: 254 nm UV-C germicidal lamp in a stainless steel chamber. Inactivates bacteria, viruses, and protozoan cysts in the flowing water.
Big Blue 20" × 4.5" cartridge housings provide the flow capacity needed for whole-house demand. Bracketed wall-mount design for compact installation.
Important: UV Maintenance Discipline
UV systems work only when the lamp is operating at full output. Two ongoing service requirements that owners sometimes overlook:
- Replace the UV lamp every 12 months even if it's still glowing — UV-C output drops below germicidal levels well before the lamp fails visually
- Keep the pre-filter cartridges fresh — turbid or sediment-laden water blocks UV penetration, and a saturated carbon stage allowing chlorine through can foul the UV quartz sleeve
Installation
Professional installation is strongly recommended. The system requires power (240 V mains) at the install point and connects to the cold supply line at the point of entry. A licensed plumber and a basic electrical connection are needed for compliant installation.
Compliance
This system is not subject to WaterMark certification under Australian plumbing regulations — it's a downstream-of-meter point-of-entry product. If your installation specifically requires WaterMark on the filter housings (some council requirements or insurance policies), step up to the WaterMark-certified 3-stage Big Blue system instead.
